  • Understanding Methyl Groups in Chemical Structures (-CH3)
A single straight line (-CH3) extending from an atomic symbol in a structural formula represents a methyl group. A methyl group is a functional group composed of a carbon atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms. In a structural formula, the methyl group is often abbreviated as "-CH3". For example, in the structural formula of methane (CH4), the four lines extending from the central carbon atom each represent a methyl group.
