  • Physical vs. Chemical Changes: Understanding State Changes
    State changes are physical changes.

A physical change is a change in the form or appearance of a substance without a change in its chemical composition. State changes, such as melting, freezing, vaporization, and condensation, are all physical changes. During a state change, the substance changes from one state of matter (solid, liquid, or gas) to another without any chemical reactions occurring. The chemical composition of the substance remains the same.
