  • Fission Reactions: The Role of Radioactive Isotopes
Fission is a nuclear reaction in which a heavy nucleus splits into two or more lighter nuclei. In order for fission to occur, the nucleus must be unstable and have a high enough ratio of neutrons to protons. Non-radioactive elements are stable and do not have a high enough ratio of neutrons to protons to undergo fission. Therefore, we cannot use a non-radioactive element in a fission reaction.
