  • Glowing Splint Test: Identifying Oxygen in Gases
The test to show that a gas is oxygen is the glowing splint test.

This test is performed by taking a clean wooden splint and lighting it on fire. Once the splint is lit, it is placed in the gas to be tested. If the splint continues to burn brightly, then the gas is oxygen. This test is based on the fact that oxygen is the only gas that supports combustion.
