  • Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH): Base or Acid? Properties & Uses
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a strong base, also known as sodium hydrate or lye, and is not an acid. It is a highly caustic chemical compound and is commonly used in many industrial and household applications, such as soap and detergent manufacturing, paper production, and drain cleaning. Sodium hydroxide readily dissociates in water, releasing hydroxide ions (OH-) which contribute to its basic properties.
