  • Electrons: Understanding the Negative Charge in Atoms
The negatively charged particle found in an atom is called an electron. Electrons are one of the three subatomic particles that make up atoms, the other two being protons and neutrons. Electrons are located in the electron cloud surrounding the nucleus of an atom and are responsible for the atom's chemical properties. They have a negative electric charge equal in magnitude to the positive charge of a proton, and a very small mass compared to protons and neutrons. Electrons play a crucial role in chemical reactions, as they are involved in the formation and breaking of chemical bonds.
