  • Understanding Burps: Causes, Composition & When to Worry
    A burp, also known as a belch, is a sudden expulsion of air from the stomach through the mouth. It is caused by a buildup of gas in the stomach, which can be caused by eating or drinking too quickly, talking while eating, or chewing gum. Burping can also be a sign of a medical condition, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

    The gas that is expelled during a burp is composed of a mixture of air and stomach contents, including carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen, and nitrogen. The composition of the gas can vary depending on what a person has eaten or drunk.

    Burping is usually a harmless occurrence, but it can be embarrassing or uncomfortable. There are a few things that you can do to reduce the amount of gas that you swallow and burp, such as:

    * Eating and drinking slowly

    * Avoiding carbonated beverages

    * Not talking while eating

    * Not chewing gum

    * Avoiding foods that are high in fiber

    If you experience frequent burping, you should talk to your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
