  • CH3+ Ion Hybridization: Understanding sp2 Configuration
The hybridization of the carbon atom in the CH3+ ion is sp2. This is because the carbon atom has three sigma bonds to the three hydrogen atoms and one empty p orbital. The three sigma bonds are formed by the overlap of the sp2 hybrid orbitals of the carbon atom with the s orbitals of the hydrogen atoms. The empty p orbital is perpendicular to the plane of the three sigma bonds.
