An eggshell is a composite material which is a mixture of primarily calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and protein. The protein component of the eggshell has several important functions, one of which is to bind the calcium carbonate crystals together. The color and texture of the eggshell are also affected by organic compounds such as pigments, lipids and proteins. Therefore, an eggshell is a mixture and not a pure substance.
