  • Elements vs. Compounds: Understanding Chemical Substances
    Elements

Elements are the most basic substances in chemistry. They are made up of only one type of atom. There are 118 known elements, each with its unique properties. Elements can be found in nature as pure substances, such as gold or silver, or they can be combined with other elements to form compounds.

    Compounds

Compounds are substances made up of two or more elements that are chemically bonded together. When elements bond together, they share their electrons, creating a new substance with different properties than the original elements. There are countless different compounds, each with its unique structure and properties.
