  • Exothermic Reactions: Understanding Enthalpy Changes
An exothermic reaction releases heat into the surroundings and has a negative enthalpy change. Conversely, an endothermic reaction absorbs heat from the surroundings and has a positive enthalpy change. Positive enthalpy values denote energy input, while negative enthalpy values represent energy release. Therefore, an exothermic reaction cannot have positive enthalpy.
