  • Polyatomic Ions & Ionic Bonds: Common Examples & Compounds
    Polyatomic ions are ions that contain more than one atom. Some of the most common polyatomic ions that bond with other to form an ionic bond include:

    * Sulfate ion (SO4^2-)

    * Nitrate ion (NO3^-)

    * Carbonate ion (CO3^2-)

    * Phosphate ion (PO4^3-)

    * Hydroxide ion (OH^-)

    * Ammonium ion (NH4^+)

    These ions can bond with other ions to form a variety of different ionic compounds. For example, sulfate ion can bond with calcium ion (Ca^2+) to form calcium sulfate (CaSO4), nitrate ion can bond with potassium ion (K^+) to form potassium nitrate (KNO3), and carbonate ion can bond with sodium ion (Na^+) to form sodium carbonate (Na2CO3).
