  • The Structure of Atoms: Understanding Empty Space
Atoms are mostly made up of empty space. In fact, atoms are mostly comprised of the space that surrounds the nucleus, which is the dense core of the atom that contains protons and neutrons. The electrons, which are the negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus, take up very little space compared to the nucleus. As a result, atoms are mostly made up of empty space.
