  • Ionic Bonds in MgO: Understanding the Chemical Connection
MgO is an ionic compound. This means that it is composed of ions, which are atoms that have lost or gained electrons. In the case of MgO, the magnesium atom loses two electrons to become a positively charged ion (Mg2+), while the oxygen atom gains two electrons to become a negatively charged ion (O2-). The electrostatic attraction between these oppositely charged ions holds the compound together.
