  • Is Dissolving Salt a Physical or Chemical Change? - Chemistry Explained
    Physical property.

When table salt (sodium chloride) dissolves in water, the sodium and chloride ions separate and become surrounded by water molecules. This process is called ionization. Ionization is a physical change because the chemical composition of the salt does not change. The sodium and chloride ions are still present in the water, but they are now separated from each other.
