Safe Use and Storage
1. Safety Precautions:
* Avoid touching dry ice directly with bare hands. Always use gloves or a towel. It can easily cause frostbite if it comes in contact with skin.
* Ventilate the area where dry ice is used and stored. Since it releases Carbon dioxide upon sublimation, proper ventilation is essential. Never use it in a closed or confined space.
2. Working Space:
* Use a well-ventilated area.
* Ensure there is adequate space for proper air circulation.
3. Appropriate Storage:
* Dry ice should be stored in special insulated dry ice containers or coolers equipped with proper ventilation to avoid gas build-up.
* Ensure the storage area is free of any water or moisture as moisture coming in contact with dry ice can potentially explode the block of ice.
4. Protective Gear:
* Always use gloves when handling dry ice to avoid direct skin contact.
* Wear closed-toe shoes or heavy boots.
* Safety goggles are recommended to protect your eyes from potential ice chips.
5. Transporting Precaution:
* Keep a window cracked open if carrying dry ice inside a vehicle.
6. Disposal:
* Do not dispose of dry ice in a sink or trash bin as it can cause pressure buildup and cause damage or even explosions.
* The safest way to dispose of it is to sublimate it by placing it in a well-ventilated area until completely evaporated or gradually letting it sublimate in a sink full of warm water.
7. Never Consume:
* Dry ice is NOT safe for consumption. It can lead to severe damage to internal organs if accidentally swallowed.
