When a cell in Excel displays a series of hash marks (#####), it indicates that the column is too narrow to show the cell’s content. This can happen when you paste a large number, the column width is manually reduced, or the cell is formatted in a way that conflicts with the value.
Excel will show ##### when the cell contains a number that cannot fit in the available space. It also shows them if a formula produces a negative number in a column formatted for dates, or if the cell is set to a format that cannot display the entered value.
When entering large numbers directly, Excel usually expands the column automatically. The problem often arises when you paste data from another source or reduce the column width afterward. Keep columns wide enough for the expected data or use AutoFit regularly to avoid ##### symbols.
