Humidity, the amount of water vapor in the air, shapes weather patterns—think cloud formation—and also influences human physiology. To grasp its impact, distinguish absolute from relative humidity. Absolute humidity measures the raw moisture content, whereas relative humidity expresses how saturated the air is relative to its maximum capacity at a given temperature. Warm air holds more vapor, so higher relative humidity can have pronounced physiological effects.
Sweating is your body's primary cooling mechanism. In dry air, sweat evaporates quickly, drawing heat away. High humidity slows evaporation, so your body struggles to shed heat, making humid heat feel far more oppressive than dry heat.
When heat cannot dissipate efficiently, a cascade of health problems can ensue. Over-sweating may precipitate dehydration, triggering fatigue, cramps, and dizziness. Persistent sweat on the skin can cause heat rashes by inflaming sweat ducts. Prolonged hyperthermia can progress to heat exhaustion or, in severe cases, life‑threatening heat stroke.

Beyond impaired cooling, high relative humidity can hamper respiration. Because humid air contains more water vapor, the oxygen concentration per volume decreases, forcing lungs to work harder to acquire adequate oxygen.
Humidity also impedes the dispersion of airborne contaminants, trapping pollutants indoors. Breathing this polluted air can trigger or worsen respiratory conditions like asthma, COPD, and allergies, and may increase susceptibility to infections (International Journal of Molecular Sciences).
A hygrometer allows you to track relative humidity and take preventative steps. On humid days, stay well hydrated, opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics, and schedule frequent rest breaks. Inside, a dehumidifier can keep indoor humidity below 50%, promoting healthier indoor air.
