  • Lipase: The Key Enzyme for Fat Digestion in the Small Intestine
The enzyme that breaks down fat (lipids) in the small intestine is lipase.

There are actually two main types of lipase involved:

    * Pancreatic lipase: This is the primary lipase responsible for fat digestion. It's produced by the pancreas and secreted into the small intestine.

    * Gastric lipase: This lipase is produced in the stomach and plays a smaller role in fat digestion, particularly in infants.

Lipase breaks down triglycerides, the most common type of fat, into fatty acids and glycerol, which can then be absorbed by the small intestine.
