  • Understanding Your Respiratory System: How You Get Oxygen
The system that feeds oxygen to your body is called the respiratory system.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Breathing: You inhale air through your nose or mouth.

    2. Airways: The air travels down your windpipe (trachea) and into your lungs.

    3. Lungs: Your lungs are made up of tiny air sacs called alveoli. The alveoli are surrounded by tiny blood vessels called capillaries.

    4. Oxygen Exchange: Oxygen from the air in the alveoli diffuses (moves) into the capillaries. At the same time, carbon dioxide from your blood diffuses into the alveoli to be exhaled.

    5. Bloodstream: The oxygen-rich blood is then carried throughout your body by your circulatory system.

The respiratory system works in close coordination with the circulatory system to deliver oxygen to your cells and remove carbon dioxide.
