  • Microbes: Understanding Disease-Causing Bacteria, Viruses & Fungi
The type of disease-causing organism that is so small you need a microscope to see it is called a microbe.

Here are some examples of microbes:

    * Bacteria: These are single-celled organisms that can cause a variety of illnesses, like pneumonia, strep throat, and food poisoning.

    * Viruses: Even smaller than bacteria, viruses are not considered living organisms but rather tiny packages of genetic material that need a host cell to replicate. Examples include the flu, HIV, and COVID-19.

    * Fungi: Some fungi, like the kind that causes athlete's foot or ringworm, are microscopic.

    * Parasites: Some parasites, like the ones that cause malaria or giardia, have microscopic stages in their life cycle.

These are just a few examples, and there are many other types of microbes that can cause disease.
