  • Ants & Bees: Understanding the Roles of Queens and Mates
The insects that have a "king" and "queen" are ants and bees.

    * Ants: In ant colonies, the queen is the only reproductive female, responsible for laying all the eggs. The "king" doesn't exist in ant colonies. Instead, the queen mates with winged males (drones) during a nuptial flight. The drones die shortly after mating, and the queen starts her new colony.

    * Bees: The queen bee is the largest and most important member of the hive, responsible for laying eggs. The "king" in bee colonies is actually the drone, which is a male bee. He mates with the queen and then dies.

It's important to note that while we refer to these insects as having "kings" and "queens," this is an analogy to human social structures. In reality, these insects have complex social hierarchies and roles within their colonies.
