    Organisms that cannot produce their own food are called heterotrophs.

    Here's why:

    * Hetero means "other" or "different".

    * Troph refers to "nourishment" or "feeding".

    Therefore, heterotrophs get their nourishment by consuming other organisms, either directly (like animals eating plants) or indirectly (like decomposers eating dead organic matter).
