  • Meiosis: The Cell Division for Sexual Reproduction - Germ Cells
Meiosis occurs in germ cells, also known as gametes.

    Here's why:

    * Germ cells are specialized cells that are responsible for sexual reproduction. In animals, these are sperm cells in males and egg cells in females.

    * Meiosis is a type of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes in a cell by half. This is essential for creating gametes, which have only half the number of chromosomes as a normal body cell.

    * When two gametes (one from each parent) combine during fertilization, the resulting zygote has the correct number of chromosomes for the species.

So, while other cells in the body divide through mitosis, only germ cells undergo meiosis.
