  • Plankton: Understanding Microscopic Life in Water
Microscopic organisms that float in the water are called plankton.

There are two main types of plankton:

    * Phytoplankton: These are plant-like organisms that use photosynthesis to make their own food. They are essential for the food web in aquatic ecosystems, as they are the primary producers. Examples include diatoms, algae, and cyanobacteria.

    * Zooplankton: These are animal-like organisms that feed on other plankton. They include a wide variety of organisms, such as copepods, krill, and jellyfish larvae.

Plankton are found in all types of water, from the ocean to lakes and rivers. They play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle and are a major source of food for larger organisms.
