  • Basidium: Understanding Spore Production in Fungi
A club-shaped structure in which spores are produced is called a basidium.

Basidia are found in basidiomycetes, a group of fungi that includes mushrooms, toadstools, puffballs, and shelf fungi.

    Here's how it works:

    * Basidia are specialized cells located on the underside of the mushroom cap (or on other fruiting bodies).

    * Meiosis (cell division) occurs within the basidium, producing four haploid spores called basidiospores.

    * The basidiospores are then released into the air, where they can germinate and grow into new fungi.

So, the club-shaped structure is a key part of the reproductive cycle of basidiomycetes.
