  • Why Are Plants Green? Understanding Chlorophyll and Photosynthesis
Plant cells are green because they contain chlorophyll.

Chlorophyll is a pigment that absorbs light energy, particularly in the red and blue wavelengths, and reflects green light, which is why plants appear green. This absorbed light energy is used in photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into chemical energy in the form of sugars.

Animal cells do not contain chlorophyll and therefore do not perform photosynthesis.
