  • Characteristics of Fungi: A Comprehensive Overview
Organisms in the Kingdom Fungi have the following characteristics:

    * Heterotrophic: They obtain nutrients from organic matter, meaning they cannot produce their own food like plants do.

    * Eukaryotic: They have cells with membrane-bound nuclei and organelles.

    * Chitinous cell walls: Their cell walls are made of chitin, a strong and flexible polysaccharide.

    * Saprotrophic or parasitic: They obtain nutrients by decomposing organic matter (saprotrophic) or by living on and absorbing nutrients from a living host (parasitic).

    * Reproduce through spores: They produce spores, which are tiny reproductive cells that can survive in harsh conditions and disperse easily.

    * Multicellular (except for yeasts): Most fungi are multicellular organisms composed of hyphae, thread-like structures that form a network called mycelium.
