  • Robert Hooke: Discoverer of Plant Cells - History & Significance
The scientist who discovered cells in plants was Robert Hooke.

In 1665, he used a microscope to examine a thin slice of cork. He observed small, box-like compartments, which he named "cells" because they reminded him of the cells in a monastery.

While he didn't actually see living cells, his discovery marked a significant milestone in the understanding of plant structure and led to further exploration of the cellular world.
