  • Autotrophs: Understanding Self-Feeding Organisms - Definition & Examples
    An organism that is able to make its own food is called an autotroph.

    Here's why:

    * Auto means "self"

    * Troph means "nourishment"

    So, autotrophs literally mean "self-nourishing" organisms. They can create their own food source, usually through a process called photosynthesis. This process uses sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce sugars (food) and oxygen.

    Examples of autotrophs include:

    * Plants

    * Algae

    * Some bacteria
