  • Autotrophs: Understanding Self-Feeding Organisms - Definition & Examples
    An organism that makes its own food is called an autotroph.

    Here's why:

    * Auto means "self"

    * Troph means "nourishment"

    So, autotroph literally means "self-nourishing".

    The most common type of autotroph is a photoautotroph, which uses sunlight to make food through photosynthesis. Plants, algae, and some bacteria are examples of photoautotrophs.
