  • Aristotle: The Father of Biological Classification - History & Scala Naturae
The credit for the first organized classification of plants and animals goes to Aristotle (384-322 BC).

    Here's why:

    * Early Attempts: While other ancient philosophers and naturalists made observations about the natural world, Aristotle was the first to systematically categorize living things.

    * Scala Naturae: He developed the concept of the "Scala Naturae" or "Great Chain of Being," which placed organisms in a hierarchical order based on their perceived complexity, with humans at the top.

    * Animal Classification: He divided animals into categories like "blooded" and "bloodless," and further subdivided them based on characteristics like habitat, mode of reproduction, and movement.

    * Plant Classification: Aristotle also classified plants based on their size, shape, and properties.

Although his system is not used today in its entirety, it laid the foundation for the development of modern taxonomy.
