This biome is characterized by its hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. It is found in regions around the Mediterranean Sea, as well as in California, Chile, South Africa, and Australia.

While the term "Mediterranean" is often used to refer to this biome, it can also be called the Mediterranean woodland and shrubland or the Mediterranean forest, woodland, and scrub.
