  • Heterotrophs: Understanding Organisms That Consume for Energy
    An organism that can't make its own food is called a heterotroph.

    Here's why:

    * Hetero means "other" or "different"

    * Troph refers to "nourishment" or "food"

    So, a heterotroph literally means "other-nourisher". This means they rely on consuming other organisms (plants, animals, or even decaying matter) to obtain their energy and nutrients.

    Examples of heterotrophs include:

    * Animals

    * Fungi

    * Bacteria

    * Some protists
