Chromosomes are structures that contain the genetic material (DNA) of an organism. They are found in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells (cells with a membrane-bound nucleus).

While the number and structure of chromosomes may differ between species, the fundamental function of carrying and transmitting genetic information is common to both plants and animals.
