  • Understanding Parasites: Definition, Types & Host-Parasite Relationships
    An organism that gets its food from living in or on another organism is called a parasite.

    Here's why:

    * Parasitism is a type of symbiotic relationship where one organism (the parasite) benefits at the expense of another organism (the host).

    * The parasite depends on the host for survival, obtaining its food, shelter, and sometimes even transportation from the host.

    * This often comes at a cost to the host, which can experience various negative effects, ranging from mild discomfort to serious illness or even death.

    Examples of parasites include:

    * Ticks feeding on blood from animals

    * Tapeworms living in the intestines of animals

    * Fleas living on the skin of animals

    * Mistletoe growing on trees

    * Malaria parasites living in the red blood cells of humans
