    Mendel called this principle the Principle of Segregation.

    This principle states that during the formation of gametes (sperm and egg cells), the two alleles for a trait separate from each other, so that each gamete receives only one allele. This ensures that offspring inherit one allele from each parent, resulting in the variation we see in traits.
