  • Bryophytes: The Plant Group with Free-Living Sporophyte and Gametophyte
The group of plants where both the sporophyte and gametophyte are free-living is bryophytes.

    Here's why:

    * Bryophytes include mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. They are non-vascular plants, meaning they lack a specialized vascular system to transport water and nutrients.

    * Sporophyte: The sporophyte generation in bryophytes is the dominant, but it remains attached to and dependent on the gametophyte for nutrition. It produces spores through meiosis.

    * Gametophyte: The gametophyte generation is independent and photosynthetic. It produces gametes through mitosis, which then fuse to form a zygote that develops into the sporophyte.

In contrast, in other plant groups like ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms, the sporophyte is the dominant generation, and the gametophyte is reduced and dependent on the sporophyte.
