  • Photosynthesis: Where Does It Happen? Plant vs. Animal Cells Explained
    Photosynthesis only happens in plant cells (and some types of bacteria and algae).

    Here's why:

    * Chloroplasts: Plant cells have specialized organelles called chloroplasts. These contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that absorbs light energy from the sun. Chloroplasts are the sites where photosynthesis takes place.

    * Animal cells lack chloroplasts and chlorophyll. They cannot capture sunlight energy and therefore cannot perform photosynthesis. They obtain energy by consuming food (heterotrophic).
