  • Cell Membrane Function: Selective Permeability and Importance
    One of the most important functions of the cell membrane is to regulate the passage of substances into and out of the cell. This is known as selective permeability.

    Here's why this is so important:

    * Maintaining internal environment: The cell needs to control what comes in and out to maintain its internal environment, which is crucial for its survival and proper functioning.

    * Waste removal: Cells need to get rid of waste products like carbon dioxide and nitrogenous waste.

    * Signaling: The cell membrane contains receptors that bind to specific molecules, allowing the cell to communicate with its surroundings and respond to external signals.

    The cell membrane accomplishes this through its structure, which is composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins. These proteins act as channels, pumps, and receptors, allowing for the selective transport of molecules across the membrane.
