  • What is DNA? Understanding the Building Block of Life
The large molecule that is the main constituent of chromosomes is DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid).

    Here's why:

    * Structure: DNA is a long, complex molecule made up of two strands twisted around each other in a double helix shape.

    * Genetic Information: DNA contains the genetic instructions for building and maintaining an organism. These instructions are encoded in the sequence of its four chemical bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T).

    * Chromosomes: Chromosomes are made up of tightly packed DNA, along with proteins called histones. These proteins help to organize and compact the DNA, allowing it to fit inside the nucleus of a cell.

So, while chromosomes are made up of both DNA and proteins, DNA is the primary component and carries the essential genetic information.
