  • Lymphatic Absorption: Fats & Fat-Soluble Vitamins - Digestive Health
The two primary nutrients that leave the GI tract via the lymphatic system are:

    1. Fat: Fat molecules, specifically triglycerides, are too large to directly enter the bloodstream. They are packaged into chylomicrons (tiny fat droplets) within the small intestine. These chylomicrons are then absorbed into the lymphatic system via lacteals, specialized lymphatic vessels within the villi of the small intestine.

    2. Fat-soluble vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble, meaning they dissolve in fat. They are absorbed along with dietary fats and follow the same path as chylomicrons, entering the lymphatic system and eventually reaching the bloodstream.

It's important to note that while other nutrients like proteins and carbohydrates are absorbed primarily into the bloodstream via the capillary network within the villi, a small portion of these nutrients may also enter the lymphatic system. However, fat and fat-soluble vitamins are the main nutrients transported by the lymphatic system.
