  • Understanding Metabolism: The Body's Chemical Reactions
All reactions in the body are collectively called metabolism.

Metabolism encompasses all the chemical processes that occur within a living organism to maintain life. These reactions can be broadly classified into two categories:

    * Anabolism: The building up of complex molecules from simpler ones, requiring energy. Examples include protein synthesis, the creation of glycogen from glucose, and the formation of lipids.

    * Catabolism: The breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones, releasing energy. Examples include the digestion of food, the breakdown of glycogen into glucose, and the oxidation of glucose for energy production.

So, while individual reactions may have specific names, the umbrella term for all of them is metabolism.
