Scientists classify animals into two main groups based on the presence or absence of a backbone (also called a spinal column):

* Vertebrates: Animals with a backbone. This group includes mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

* Invertebrates: Animals without a backbone. This group includes a vast majority of animal species, such as insects, worms, mollusks, and crustaceans.
