  • Theodor Schwann: Pioneer of Cell Theory in Animals
The scientist who theorized that animals are composed of cells was Theodor Schwann.

He, along with Matthias Schleiden, formulated the cell theory in 1839. This theory states that all living organisms are composed of cells, and that cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living organisms.

While Schwann focused on animal cells, Schleiden studied plant cells. Together, their work revolutionized our understanding of biology.
