1. Phospholipids: These are the primary building blocks of the membrane. They form a bilayer, with their hydrophilic (water-loving) heads facing the outside and inside of the cell, and their hydrophobic (water-fearing) tails facing each other in the middle.
2. Proteins: Embedded within the phospholipid bilayer are various proteins that serve a variety of functions, including:
* Transport proteins: Facilitate the movement of molecules across the membrane.
* Receptor proteins: Bind to signaling molecules and initiate cellular responses.
* Enzymes: Catalyze biochemical reactions within the membrane.
* Structural proteins: Provide support and shape to the membrane.
While these are the two main components, the cell membrane also contains smaller amounts of cholesterol and glycolipids, which contribute to its stability and fluidity.
