  • Matthias Schleiden: Discoverer of Plant Cell Theory - Biography & Contributions
The scientist who concluded that all plants are made up of living cells was Matthias Schleiden.

He was a German botanist who, in 1838, published his observations that all plant tissues are composed of cells. This was a crucial step in the development of cell theory, which states that all living organisms are made up of cells.

While Schleiden's work focused on plants, his colleague, Theodor Schwann, later extended the theory to include animals, solidifying the idea that cells are the fundamental building blocks of all life.
