  • Sagittal Suture Synostosis: Understanding Skull Fusion
The joint that will eventually develop into a synostosis is the sagittal suture in the skull.

    Here's why:

    * Synostosis: This refers to the fusion of two separate bones into one single bone.

    * Sagittal Suture: This is the fibrous joint that runs along the midline of the top of the skull, separating the two parietal bones.

    * Development: The sagittal suture normally starts to fuse in the late teens or early twenties. This process is called synostosis and it's a natural part of skull development.

Important Note: While the sagittal suture is a normal example of synostosis, premature fusion of this suture (before the proper time) can lead to a condition called scaphocephaly, which can cause misshapen skulls and other problems.
