Robert Hooke: The Father of Cell Biology - Discovery & Significance
The scientist who gave cells their name was Robert Hooke.
He observed thin slices of cork under a microscope in 1665 and saw small compartments that reminded him of the cells of a monastery. He called these compartments "cells" because of this resemblance.
