  • Sebaceous Glands: Function, Location & Importance
The gland that produces oil is called the sebaceous gland.

These glands are found all over the body, except for the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. They produce an oily substance called sebum which helps to:

    * Lubricate and waterproof the skin: Sebum helps to keep the skin soft and pliable, and it prevents water loss.

    * Protect the skin from bacteria and fungi: Sebum has antimicrobial properties that help to protect the skin from infection.

    * Help to regulate body temperature: Sebum helps to insulate the skin and prevent heat loss.

If the sebaceous glands become overactive, they can produce too much oil, which can lead to acne. However, sebum is essential for healthy skin, and it is important to keep the skin clean and hydrated to help keep the sebaceous glands functioning properly.
